How to Rename Photos by Date Taken in Bulk

Camera names like IMG_4821 and DSC_0107 lose context once files from several devices are mixed together. The capture date already stored in EXIF can become part of the filename.

Use the capture date, not the copied-file date

The useful date is usually EXIF DateTimeOriginal, because filesystem creation or modified dates can change when photos are copied, downloaded or restored.

Add a sequence for duplicates

Several photos can share the same day, and bursts can share the same second. A padded sequence makes collisions predictable.

  • Use {date} in the filename template
  • Add {index} for uniqueness
  • Preview before export

Keep originals untouched

Batch Img Tools creates renamed export files rather than renaming the originals in place, so you can test a pattern safely.
